Sparse versus Low-Spread Representations for Signal Estimation in Noise Radu V. Balan, Justinian Rosca, Scott Rickard Siemens Corporate Research, 755 College Road East, Princeton NJ 08540 Abstract Estimation of a sparse signal representation, one with the minimum number of nonzero components, is hard. In this paper we show that for a nontrivial set of the input data the corresponding optimization problem is equivalent to and can be solved by an algorithm devised for a simpler optimization problem. The simpler optimization problem corresponds to estimation of signals under a low-spread constraint. The goal of the two optimization problems is to minimize the Euclidian norm of the linear approximation error with an penalty on the coefficients, for (sparse) and (low-spread) respectively. The problem is hard, whereas the problem can be solved efficiently by an iterative algorithm. Here we precisely define the optimization problem, construct an associated optimization problem and show that for a set with open interior of the input data the optimizers of the two optimization problems have the same support. The associated optimization problem is used to find the support of the optimizer. Once the support of the problem is known, the actual solution is easily found by solving a linear system of equations. However we point out our approach does not solve the harder optimization problem for all input data and thus may fail to produce the optimal solution in some cases.

Image Classification via Sparse Representation and Subspace Alignment
Image representation is a crucial problem in image processing where there exist many low-level representations of image, i.e., SIFT, HOG and so on. But there is a missing link across low-level and high-level semantic representations. In fact, traditional machine learning approaches, e.g., non-negative matrix factorization, sparse representation and principle component analysis are employed to d...
متن کاملSpeech Enhancement using Adaptive Data-Based Dictionary Learning
In this paper, a speech enhancement method based on sparse representation of data frames has been presented. Speech enhancement is one of the most applicable areas in different signal processing fields. The objective of a speech enhancement system is improvement of either intelligibility or quality of the speech signals. This process is carried out using the speech signal processing techniques ...

This paper presents a new hidden Markov model-based (HMM-based) speech enhancement framework based on the independent component analysis (ICA). We propose analytical procedures for training clean speech and noise models by the Baum re-estimation algorithm and present a Maximum a posterior (MAP) estimator based on Laplace-Gaussian (for clean speech and noise respectively) combination in the HMM ...
متن کاملGrid Impedance Estimation Using Several Short-Term Low Power Signal Injections
In this paper, a signal processing method is proposed to estimate the low and high-frequency impedances of power systems using several short-term low power signal injections for a frequency range of 0-150 kHz. This frequency range is very important, and thusso it is considered in the analysis of power quality issues of smart grids. The impedance estimation is used in many power system applicati...
متن کاملA New Method for Speech Enhancement Based on Incoherent Model Learning in Wavelet Transform Domain
Quality of speech signal significantly reduces in the presence of environmental noise signals and leads to the imperfect performance of hearing aid devices, automatic speech recognition systems, and mobile phones. In this paper, the single channel speech enhancement of the corrupted signals by the additive noise signals is considered. A dictionary-based algorithm is proposed to train the speech...
